Is a German-based social networking website targeted towards professionals.  It is available in several languages and there are free and premium versions for members.

Signing Up On Xing

Xing’s sign up page lets you register for an account just by inputting your first and last name, a valid email address and a password.  Oddly enough, Xing’s password requirement is that it has to be at least four characters long, which is well below the standard six or eight characters minimum required by other services. Xing lets you add in numbers, symbols and mixed cases to make your password more complex.

Safety Options

Xing uses https by default on its website, however it does not give users any options that relate to secure access for their accounts.  You can edit your password via the settings page, but that’s just about it.

To access the settings page, click on the gear icon in the right-hand menu and under the ‘Login data’ tab click on the ‘Edit’ button in the password section.

Finding Your Security Settings

Xing’s security settings are very basic and don’t extend further than the ability to change one’s password and set some privacy controls on your account.

To access the Xing’s security settings, click on the gear icon at the right-hand menu on the homepage.  The ‘Login data’ tab contains your username and password information which you can easily edit.  The ‘Privacy’ tab displays a list of all the information you share with other Xing users and you can quickly control which data you want to make visible or hide.

Personal Information

Xing has a very strict personal data policy.  All the information collected by Xing is only used to provide you with its services.  Xing will never pass your personal data on to any third party, neither for advertising, nor for marketing or for any other purposes without your consent.

Removing Your Xing Account

Deleting your Xing account is very easy, however the link to do so is hidden away in the Help Centre.  To remove your Xing account, go to this page and click on the ‘Delete my profile’ link at the very bottom.

You will be taken to the profile deletion page where you will be given a list of all the data that will be removed as a consequence of deleting your Xing account.  Click on the ‘Next’ button and a pop-up box will ask you to choose a reason for leaving the service and to input your password one more time.

Click on the ‘Delete my profile’ button to permanently delete your profile.  Please note that messages and posts on public pages or personal pages of other members will not be removed after closing your account.  These should be removed individually before deleting your account.

Xing’s Security Record

Xing is a relatively low-key player in the social networking arena and this means it has not experienced any major hacking attacks so far.

Third Party Apps

Xing lets users integrate external applications to their account and in every case, users are required to provide their consent before authorising any of the applications to access their information.

Third party applications that access the data and content of Xing users are screened by the company in order to ensure that your data is kept safe.  If you activate such a Xing application or service, you are responsible for the personal data processed on your behalf.  Xing provides users with features for managing and deleting linked applications at any time.

Tracking Your Data

Xing does not give users any tools to help them track down the security of their information.  It does however provide a variety of options for controlling privacy settings via the accounts settings page.
