A microblogging platform and social networking site that allows users to upload multimedia and other content in very brief posts on their blogs.

Giving a Tumble

You can register for a Tumblr account on its homepage and signing up is very easy.  All you need to input is a valid email, a password and your username.

Tumblr’s password policy is very simple but it does not give you any hints on how to create a strong and unique password.  For a password to be accepted by Tumblr’s system, it has to be at least eight characters long.  Making your password stronger by adding symbols, numerals or using mixed cases is possible.

Safety Tumbles

Tumblr does not support secure https browsing on its system by default and there are no options available to switch it on from your account.  Two-factor authentication is not available either, so having a very strong and unique password is the only way to defend your account from intruders.

Security Settings On Tumblr

Editing Tumblr’s security settings is very easy to do.  Just log in to your account and click on the gear icon at the top of the page.  On the ‘Account’ tab you have the option to change your password, and by clicking on the ‘Apps’ tab from the left-hand side menu, you can also see the list of apps you have connected to your Tumblr account.  You can however modify the access that these apps have to your information should you wish.

Personal Data Privacy

In some cases, Tumblr share information with outside sources for the purposes of operating and improving its services.  These third parties are generally bound by confidentiality obligations and do not have any right to use your personal information or other information Tumblr shares with them beyond the scope of their work.

Deleting Your Account

Deleting your Tumblr account and all of its content is very simple to do.  Access the account settings page by clicking on the gear icon at the top of the page and press the ‘Delete account’ button at the bottom of the ‘Account’ page.  You will be asked to confirm this request before proceeding with the removal of your account.

Tumblr’s Safety Record

So far, there has been no public confirmation of major hacking attacks on Tumblr accounts.

Third Party Apps

With Tumblr you can integrate applications and services from third parties into your account.  You may also choose to share information that you provide on Tumblr, like blog posts, with these third party services, however this data will be subject to their privacy policy and Tumblr maintains that you are responsible for reading and understanding those third party Services’ privacy policies.

Information Security

Tumblr provides very limited options to users who want to track how secure their information is.  It does however provide tools for managing any linked accounts and the type of data that is being shared or published on them through Tumblr.  These can be accessed on the account settings page by clicking on the ‘Apps’ tab.
