A free service which lets users create web pages (called lenses) on different subjects which interest them. There are thousands of user-created lenses on Squidoo spanning a range of 35 different topics from cooking to programming. These pages can be used simply to provide information and publish new content on them or also to sell products and raise funds for charities.
Opening an account
To open a Squidoo account and start creating your lenses, you can either integrate the login data from your Facebook or Twitter accounts or sign up using your email address.
If you sign up using your email address you will need to enter a username and password. The password policy on Squidoo is that your password has to be a minimum of six characters long; there are no other requirements for a password to be accepted.
Security features on Squidoo
Squidoo gives its users a simple online experience with the most basic security options available on their accounts. Security features on Squidoo are scarce and include only the ability to change your password, restrict adult content and control the access to your account by third party apps.
Managing your security settings
To manage your security settings on Squidoo, log in to your account dashboard and click on Manage Settings at the top-right of the screen. On the Account section, you will have access to security settings like changing your password, enabling or disabling adult content filters, manage privacy settings and a link to delete your account.
Personal data collection
Squidoo collects personal data from its users to help it personalise and improve its service. The company never shares the data it collects with other companies for commercial reasons, and it will always ask the user for his or her consent to receive promotional material from advertisers and affiliate companies that may be of interest. The users have the ability to unsubscribe at any time from any newsletter or offer they join.
Deleting your account
It is very easy to delete your Squidoo account by logging into your account dashboard and clicking on Manage Settings at the top-right of the screen. Scroll to the bottom of the Account section and click on the ‘Delete account’ link to initiate the process. You will need to re-enter your password before being able to permanently delete your Squidoo account.
As a relatively small network, Squidoo has not attracted the attention of hackers nor has it been the target of other internet threats.
Linking third parties to Squidoo
Squidoo allows users to easily share the lenses they create on third party apps. Any information that is shared through these services is processed in accordance to their privacy policies.
Tracking your shared information
Although you can control the privacy settings of the content you publish online, Squidoo doesn’t give its users the option to track down how their personal information is being used by the service.
