An online community where users can share content they find online and vote on it or discuss it. There are a variety of subject-specific ‘subreddits’ which bring together readers with an interest in a particular subject. Users can add their comments to provide more information and context to the stories they share online.
You can register for an account on Reddit in seconds by choosing a username and picking your password. The password has to be at least 5 characters long and can contain a mixture of letters, numbers and other characters. Adding an email address is optional and you can refuse to receive communications from Reddit any time you want.
Security features on Reddit
Reddit doesn’t have any particular security features except your account password. It is therefore very important that you choose a secure password to keep the data on your account safe.
Managing your security settings
On your Reddit account you can change your password by clicking on your username on the top-right of the screen, and then clicking on the ‘password/email’ link. You will have to input your old password first, followed by your new one twice to confirm the change.
Personal data collection
Reddit collects very little personal information when you sign up for an account and puts a lot of emphasis on user privacy. If you put in your email address you could receive communications that may be of interest to you. You can unsubscribe at any time from these messages. Reddit will never give out your personal details to third parties for commercial reasons.
Deleting your account
Reddit lets you delete your account by clicking on your username on the top-right of the screen, and then clicking on the ‘delete’ link. You will have to input your username and password to confirm your request to close the account. Although your public profile will no longer be visible to other users, any posts and content you publish will still be visible unless you delete them manually before deleting your account.
There have been no reports of Reddit users being targeted by hackers or that the service has been compromised by other internet threats in the past.
Third parties and Reddit
Users can use their Reddit credentials to log in to third party websites, however new personal information is never revealed or shared with these sites.
Tracking the information you share
Unfortunately, Reddit doesn’t provide its users with tools that let them track down how your personal information is being used.
