An online community where users can create a blog, journal or diary. It is particularly popular in the US and Russia. The website counts almost 40 million accounts. LiveJournal users can publish a variety of content on their blogs including text, images and videos, whilst joining various online communities and adding friends to their network.
Creating an account
To sign up for a LiveJournal account, you need to enter some personal details such as your first and last names, your gender and date of birth. You will also have to input a valid email address, take the CAPTCHA challenge and choose a password before creating your account. The password policy on LiveJournal is that your password has to be between six and 30 characters long, it must include at least one uppercase letter, one number and one lowercase letter and it must not be based on your username or email address.
Security features on LiveJournal
LiveJournal uses the basic security features needed to keep its users’ data safe. All personal data is shared over a secure SSL connection which encrypts the information the user exchanges with the company’s servers. It has a strict password policy and uses can change their password through their account settings. Unfortunately, other options like two-step authentication access and sign-in notifications are not available yet.
Managing your security settings
To edit your password on LiveJournal, log in to your account and go to the Change Password page. You will have to type in your old password first, and then enter your new password twice to confirm your decision to change it.
To manage the privacy settings on LiveJournal, click on the Privacy tab of the My Account Settings page. On this page you also have the option to enable or disable comments on your posts.
Personal data usage
LiveJournal collects personal data from its users to help it personalise and improve its service. The company never shares the data it collects with other companies for commercial reasons, and it will always ask the user for his or her consent to receive promotional material from other brands that may be of interest. The users have the ability to unsubscribe at any time from any newsletter or offer they join.
Closing your account
To delete your LiveJournal account, log on and go onto ‘My Account Settings’ page. On the ‘Account’ tab, in the section named ‘Status’, click on the ‘Delete’ link on the right. Change the status from ‘Activated’ to ‘Deactivated’ and confirm your decision. It may take around a month for all of your content to be removed from LiveJournal’s servers.
As a small website relative to other blogging platforms, LiveJournal has not attracted the attention of hackers nor has it been the target of other internet threats.
Third parties and LiveJournal
LiveJournal does not give users the possibility to connect third party applications or services to their accounts.
Tracking your shared information
Although you can control the privacy settings of the content you publish online, LiveJournal does not give its users the option to track down how their personal information is being used by the service.
