A Finnish social networking website that is aimed at teenagers and has a subscription count of over 230 million members. Users create their online avatar and roam around in a virtual world where they can design a room inside the Habbo Hotel. On Habbo, players can meet new friends, chat and organise parties, look after their virtual pets and complete quests that unlock various goodies.
To register for an account on Habbo you will need to sign up using your email address. You will also have to input your birth date and choose a password for your new account. The password you choose has to be at least six characters long and must include a mixture of letters and numbers in it.
Safety in the house
Habbo offers its members some security features to help them enjoy a safer experience online. You have access to the most basic options, such as changing your password, adding security questions and having control over some privacy settings to restrict the information other users see about you. Habbo also features an account safety lock that will automatically disable certain features when an account is accessed from an unknown computer.
Keeping up with your security settings
You can configure the security settings on Habbo by going on your Account Settings. To change your password, click on the ‘Go to the Habbo ID change password page’ link and enter your current password then enter your new password twice and the security code that appears. Click on the ‘Change’ button to confirm your new password.
To enable the Account Lock feature, go to the Account Settings, then click on ‘Identity Settings. Under the ‘Protect Your Account’ heading, click on Edit Your Security Questions. You have to choose two security questions from the drop down menu and type in the answers. Following this, you will need to input your account password to save your current settings. Finally, click on Enable Account Protection to turn on the safety lock feature on your account.
Your personal data on Habbo
Habbo collects personal data when you sign up for a new account and whenever you add more details on your profile, or when communicating with the Habbo support team. The information you give is used to provide you with a service to customise your experience on the website and to contact you with promotions, offers and newsletters. You can unsubscribe from these messages at any time. Your personal details will never be sold to third parties or used for commercial purposes without your consent.
Cancelling your account
Unfortunately, Habbo does not provide its members with an easy way to cancel their account and have their personal information removed from their servers. To cancel your Habbo account, you will have to remove all the items you have on your Habbo profile, close down all the rooms you created and spend all the Habbo credit you have. Your account will eventually be removed by Habbo during their regular profile cleansing process.
There haven been no reports that Habbo user accounts have been hacked or targeted by other internet threats. However numerous concerns have risen over the years on the safety of teenage users on this service and the sharing of inappropriate content. Habbo has responded to these issues by installing an emergency button that lets users immediately report any inappropriate activity.
Connecting third parties
Habbo lets users connect their account to their Facebook profile. When you connect your account to Facebook some personal information is shared between the services according to their respective privacy policies and the privacy settings associated by users with the content they published on their accounts.
Keeping track of your information
Habbo does not give members the ability to track down where and how the information they share on the service is used.
