Craigslist

A website that gives users the opportunity to put up classifieds and notices that other users can see.  It is mainly used to sell objects, advertise jobs and even organise events or set up dates.  The service is completely free and is available in a variety of local editions that covers notices posted from various cities around the world.

Creating an account

You can sign up for an account on Craigslist by going to the sign-up page and entering your email address.  After activating your account, you will be prompted to choose a password.  Your password has to be 8 characters long or more, and you can use a mix of characters including letters, numbers and special symbols.

Security features on Craigslist

Craigslist doesn’t offer users any security settings besides their password.  Sensitive data like personal information and payment details are transmitted through an encrypted and secure connection by default, but this is at best what users can expect from the service.

Changing your password

To edit your password on Craigslist, log in to your account and click on the Settings tab.  Near the password field, click on the ‘Change password’ link to edit your password.  You will need to re-type your old password and enter your new one twice before confirming the change.

Personal data collection

Craigslist collects very little personal data from its users, but any information that is collected will only be used for purposes relating to the website’s services.  The company never shares the data it collects with other third parties and does not engage in sending unsolicited messages.

Removing your account

There is no quick way to delete your Craigslist account.  Any account that hasn’t been used for several months will automatically by deleted by the system.  To permanently delete your account you will have to stop using the service entirely from the email address you’ve associated with it.

Security record

There have been some claims from users saying that their Craigslist accounts were hacked or that they were duped into phishing scams.  Craigslist urges its users to make sure that they read the web address on their browser to verify they’re logging into the real website.

Third parties on Craigslist

Since Craigslist aims to be a very simple service, it does not allow users to connect third party webs services and apps to their account.

Tracking your information

Although you can control the privacy settings of the content that appears on your online profile, Yahoo doesn’t let its users track down how their personal information is used.
